Mother Teresa Hostel
Koviloor is a remote village located 13 kms from our centre, near the Manjavadi Ghats in Dharmapuri District. With no road connectivity to nearby towns, children from this village - nearly 35 of them - had to walk a total of 26 km (to and fro distance) daily to attend school. In November 2005, a tragic incident occurred during the holidays. Miss D. Sasikala, one of our students from Koviloor, lost her life after slipping into a flooded brook while crossing it. She was swept away by the strong current. This heartbreaking incident brought immense grief to the entire Community School family. Deeply moved by this tragedy, Bro. George took immediate action and decided to establish a free hostel for children from Koviloor and other remote villages. Another major concern was the risk posed by wild animals, especially Bisons, which are commonly found in the hilly terrain through which students had to cross daily.
To ensure their safety and provide better coaching, all board exam students of Standards X, XI, and XII are required to stay in the school hostel. Currently, students from Kalvarayan Hills, Kolli Hills, and some from Dharmapuri and Thiruvannamalai districts also are in the school hostel. At present, our Community School Hostel offers a safe and nurturing home for nearly 450 students. The hostel provides a secure environment for students who would otherwise face long and unsafe commutes, supporting both their academic success and personal growth.
Thanks to the support of the Tribal Welfare Department, Government of Tamil Nadu, for providing partial financial assistance to hostellers and a consolidated salary of 80% to the staff.
